Accident: Motorcycle, collision with oncoming pickup truck that crossed the yellow line

On a sunny afternoon of June 28 2020, coming back from a beautiful motorcycle ride with my amazing wife, a distracted driver changed our lives forever. Less than six kilometers from our residence, a young distracted driver operating a half-on pickup truck, coming in the opposite direction, invertedly crossed the yellow line into the lane I was in. Luckily, my wife was riding her own motorcycle, staggered formation and far enough behind me to give her time to “ditch” her ride to avoid the collision. Unfortunately, despite my best attempts to avoid the collision, the pickup impacted with my exposed left side, projecting far away from my ride, and all under the helpless gaze of my wife. The outcome? A laundry list of injuries, including left below-knee amputation, cross-thoracic fractures, internal organ damage and the list goes on. In short, I’m lucky to be alive…
At the time, I was already familiar with the Fallen Riders Team, and these guys were in my hospital room within days to offer any and all the help they could to support my wife through our horrifying experience.
Despite COVID, despite the hospital staffs arguing, and all the other barriers, the team showed up to offer support, assistance with whatever we needed, and most importantly, they offered to take care of setting up and taking care of the legal matters that needed to follow immediately after the accident. I can honestly say, with both my wife and I being implicated in the accident, and neither of us having the mental capacity at the time to deal with a system we were absolutely not prepared to deal with... I cannot stress enough how critical that support became.
Throughout the entire recovery, the Fallen Riders Team was there to help and support. The moment I was out of the hospital, the Team linked me up with a fellow amputee who also still rode his motorcycle. That connection provided more help and support than any medical practitioner ever did, and also inspired me to push beyond my new limitations. This inspiration and support lead me to be back on a motorcycle nine months and 8 days after the accident!!
